Calakmul Mayan Ruins to Xcalaka

After lots more driving adventure and some long days on the road, including a late night checkin into a “no tell hotel”… another story..and a great night at a beach RV park owned by two wheel chair bound American’s, we arrived at Calakmul. When leaving the highway and entering the preserve you pay a fee to enter, and begin on a narrow paved road covered by thick jungle canopy.

If not for the advantage of my GPS unit i would have thought in a moment or two we would find a parking lot and exit to walk to some of the ruins. But actually we had entered the preserve for a 60km drive which took about an hour and a half at which time we arrived a the entrance area to the ruins.

This was a very remote spot. 60km from the road and 35km to the Guetamalan Border. It is also the largest Cat-Feline reserve in Central America. Hosting 5 types of large wild cats, can only remember 3, Jaguar, Puma, Ocelot..

We started our hike to the amazing ruins, which we also climbed many of.
It was very stunning and somewhat hard to digest that a full civilazation lived there from 400 bc to 900 ad. Very impresive to say the least. The jungle has over taken much of the city remains. But what’s left is try spectacular. Climbing to the tops and looking out over the remote jungle canopy was awe inspiring..

We spent the night camping from the trucks at the entrance to the ruins. Incredibly quiet.. A sky full of celestial creations.. And a dawn full of jungle animal noises.

Next we traversed the yucatan penisula to Xcalaka, on the Gulf of Mexico Atlantic side. This is a very typical tropical sytle area. Beachs of white sand, turquiose water, We are staying for a night at a fishing and diving resort.

While we are here we are changing out the suspension in one of the jeeps, a new couple has joined our group as planned. Their stock setup is not handling the weight well on these rough roads. So we brought springs and shocks and will do the upgrade here at the resort..

Thats all for now..
