Belize…
Belize, we really missed Belize. Having returned reminded us of why we so much liked it in the past. Think about an entire country of only 275,000 people, doesn’t Suffolk county have nearly 3 million. That’s what makes Belize so special, land, land and more land, all beautiful and green. We visited the Belize National Zoo, a small but action packed surprise. Jaguars, Puma, Monkey’s and of course the Toucan. No Liger’s but we did look..
Next we went to the 5 Blue’s National Park. This park was abandoned as the Blue lake had dried up unexpectedly in the past. So all of the access has overgrown for a number of years and all of the infrastructure to the public park areas have been abandoned. We had heard though that the water had returned, and if it was possible to reach the area it would be worth it. Well equipped as we were, we reached it and it was quite magnificent. A series of clear blue lakes and streams, including fresh water tropical fish like fancy tail guppies and cichlids. The night was dark and the jungle was alive. The drive out in the morning we passed many small villages who were quite surprised to see us as the don’t receive our type of traffic anymore. Stacey gave some kids candy and Scott gave out a soccer ball. Smiles abounded.
Now we headed to San Ignacio to camp for the night and prepare to cross the Guatemalan border. We met up with our friends Scott and Allison Cheesemen, they are Canadian Special Pioneers serving in Belize. At diner we discussed old times and their future assignment that starts April 1st, Chinese language congregation and territory in Belize City. This is a bit strange, Belize is an English speaking country with a bit of Spanish as it’s in Central America, but it has a large Chinese population with good growth potential for the ministry. We know Jehovah will bless their efforts.
In the morning we went to a mattress factory and bought a new piece of foam for our tent. The old one was just too soft and effecting our sleep. Happy to report that the new one is great. Crossed the border into Guatemala in about 2 hrs.
Missing everyone.
